The BioFlo 110 is a compact, flexible and innovative bench-scale bioreactor with a user-friendly operating panel capable of handling multiple bioreactors. The most basic kit is capable of a wide range of tasks; it includes a Primary Control Unit (PCU) and Power Controller to manage temperature and agitation. With expansion potential for the future, additional modules that control pH, pO₂, or Antifoam/Level can be added and are recognized automatically without the need for any new configuration. Dished bottom vessels facilitate thorough mixing (i.e. no dead zones) even at low agitation speeds. Temperature control can be done via water-jacketed vessels or heat blanket. Heat blanket is less efficient but economical; two large cut-outs and a reflective white inner surface make it easy to view the culture. The top lid harbors several ports for the fittings and probes. The smaller the vessel, the more congested is the arrangement of these ports on the lid. O-rings are situated at the bottom (not the top) of each port which prevents contamination from reaching the vessel. The best part of this innovative system is the sampling system. It works with a simple siphoning mechanism; the syringe coupled through a filter is used to suck the samples out into a sampling vial. This concept delivers more aseptic sampling. An optional foam trap helps to keep exhaust filters dry and free-flowing. pH, pO₂, and antifoam probes can be adjusted to any immersion length providing the flexibility of using a single probe across different vessels.

The controller at the heart of the BioFlo 110 fermentor is a leap to a new level of user-friendliness. One PCU controls up to four vessels. Advanced users can change P-I-D values and cascade options, always with the knowledge that they can return to factory settings quickly and easily. A full line of accessories like spin filters, bubble-free aeration baskets, and gasmix units are available to support both microbial and cell cultures. The BioFlo 110 controller can communicate with computers using any one of the optional BioCommand® software packages. Software is efficient for automated data collection and monitoring of cultures. A built-in PCU floppy-drive makes future firmware upgrades simple and easy.
